Chhindwara is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh . The city is located in the south of the state and is approximately 314 km from Bhopal .

The city is the administrative center of the Chhindwara district of the same name . Chhindwara has the status of a Municipal Council . The city is divided into 45 wards (constituencies).

Demographics

According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 138,291 and that of the metropolitan area is 190,041. Chhindwara has a gender ratio of 963 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 89.4% in 2011, well above the regional and national average. Almost 84% of the population are Hindus , approx. 12% are Muslims and approx. 4% belong to another or no religion. 13.5% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Infrastructure

The city is connected to the rest of India through its train station. Two national highways lead directly through the city. The nearest airport is Nagpur Airport (130 km). In Chhindwara there is a small runway for small planes with 5 to 10 passengers. Chhindwara is connected to the nearby major cities such as Nagpur , Jabalpur and Bhopal. Buses run regularly.

economy

Coal mining in the region is operated by Western Coal Fields Limited (WCL). The city is home to old industries for pottery, leather goods, and ornaments made of zinc, brass, and bell metal. On the outskirts of the city, vegetables, especially potatoes , are grown in large quantities for export to nearby areas.
