Shivamogga ( Kannada ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗ Śivamogga [ ˈɕiʋʌmoɡːʌ ]) is a city in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka . Until 2014 it was officially called Shimoga . This name is still in use in many places.

It is located in the west of Karnataka on the banks of the Tunga River , which a little later unites with the Bhadra to form Tungabhadra . With around 322,000 inhabitants (2011 census), Shimoga is the tenth largest city in Karnataka. The city is the administrative seat of the Śivamogga District .

The earlier name Shimoga was an Anglicised form of Shivamogga since the British Raj , which in turn is traditionally derived from the Sanskrit term Shivamukha ("face of Shiva "). To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Karnataka in 2006, the state government decided, following a proposal by the writer UR Ananthamurthy , to change the English names of 13 cities in Karnataka to their Kannada name forms. As a result, Shimoga was renamed Shivamogga . The Indian central government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh initially did not agree to the name change. Only under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who was newly elected in 2014 , did the renaming officially take effect on November 1, 2014.
