The Bhadra ( Kannada : ಭದ್ರಾ ನದಿ , Bhadra nadi ) is the eastern source river of Tungabhadra in the Indian state of Karnataka .

course

The Bhadra rises on the approx. 1500 m high mountain Gangamoola near Kudremukha in the Western Ghats and flows in an easterly direction over the southern part of the Deccan , together with its tributaries Somavahini , Thadabehalla and Odirayanahalla . It flows through the cities of Horanadu , Balehonnur , Balehole and NR Pura . A dam was built near Lakkavalli to form the Bhadra Reservoir . From here on, the river continues its way north and flows through the industrial city of Bhadravati . The Bhadra meets the Tunga at Kudli , a small town near Shivamogga , and is then called Tungabhadra in the further course ; this finally flows into the state of Telangana in the river Krishna , which in turn flows into the Bay of Bengal .

fauna

In 1974 the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the up to 1250 m high mountains south of the Bhadra Reservoir , in which numerous wild animals and a population of approx. 25 tigers live. Crocodiles and otters still live in various sections of the river and in the reservoir. The banks of the Bhadra reservoir are used as breeding grounds by numerous species of birds.
