Attractions

Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
  • The main attraction of the city, the Hindu god Vishnu dedicated to Lakshmi Narasimha Temple , was built by King Vira Narasimha II. (R. 1220-1235), the great-grandson of the famous Hoysala -Herrschers Vishnuvardhana (reg. 1108-1152) built. Similar to the Chennakeshava Temple of Somanathapura , the floor plan is clover-shaped; the shikhara structures above the three cellae ( garbhagrihas ) were never completed or later destroyed. The entire temple stands on an approximately 1 m high platform ( jagati ), which enables a ritual walk ( pradakshina ) around the building. As with all Hoysala temples , the ornamental and figurative building decorations are of exceptional craftsmanship and artistic quality.
  • Several modern temples are spread across the city.
  • A monumental Shiva statue is located on the Bhadra River.

Surroundings

  • In the small town of Kudli , about 25 km to the north, there is the Rameshvara temple, which is about 100 years older, but much smaller and completely without any external figure decorations.
  • About 25 km southwest of the city is the dam of the Bhadra Reservoir ; The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is about 100 km south .
