Achalpur, formerly known as Ellichpur or Illychpur , is a city in the state of Maharashtra in western India . It is part of the Amravati district . Achalpur is divided into 38 wards (constituencies) and is administered as the Municipal Council. It is 681 kilometers from Achalpur to Mumbai .
history
Achalpur was once the capital of the Sultanate of Berar , which existed from 1490 to 1574. The city later fell to the Mughal Empire and the princely state of Hyderabad .
Demographics
The city's population is 112,311 according to the 2011 census. Achalpur has a gender ratio of 933 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 91.5% in 2011. Almost 54.6% of the population are Hindus , approx. 39.5% are Muslims , approx. 4.9% are Buddhists , approx. 0.5% are Jainas , approx 0.4% are Christians and around 0.2% belong to other or no religions. 10.9% of the population are children under six years of age.
Infrastructure
The city is connected to the rest of the country by a railroad station and National Highway 24 .
