Paimpol marina

Paimpol ( Breton Pempoull ) is a French commune with 7172 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany . It belongs to the arrondissement of Guingamp and is the administrative seat (chief lieu) of the canton of Paimpol . The Breton place name means "at the extreme end of the water surface".

geography

Paimpol is located on the Channel coast , about 40 km northwest of Saint-Brieuc and 35 km east of Lannion and Perros-Guirec . Neighboring municipalities are (clockwise, starting in the southeast) Plouézec , Kerfot , Plourivo , Lézardrieux and Ploubazlanec .

Paimpol is in the area of strong tidal differences ( tidal range up to over 12 meters), so that the bay (anse de Paimpol) , which connects the place with the sea, regularly dries up to a small trickle. The fishing and leisure port - one of the most important in the region - can therefore not be called continuously; the sufficient water level in the two harbor basins is ensured by a lock . These current conditions off the coast are also used by a small tidal power plant . The Quinic , a stream, flows into the leisure harbor .

The municipality extends over 23.6 km² and in the interior reaches a maximum height of 86 m above sea level. The volcanic origin of the area can be seen, for example, at the headland of Guilben, where pillow lava and rhyolites indicate a very ancient volcanism. To the southeast of the town, in the direction of Sainte-Barbe , are the volcanic fields of Plouézec.

Paimpol is on the Départementale D 786 route along the coast , which leads from Saint-Malo / Dinard in the east to Morlaix and Brest . A 6 km long spur road connects Paimpol with the northern point of Pointe de l'Arcouest , from where there is a ferry connection to the Île de Bréhat . The city is connected to Guingamp and from there to the national rail network via a single-track regional railway line operated by the TER Bretagne ; this route used to be part of the narrow-gauge network of the Réseau Breton .

Located in the medieval Breton County Goëlo and mentioned under the name Penpol (1184) or Penpul (1198), 1202 was the Norbertine - Abbey Beauport on the territory of the later Kérity .

With the advent of cod in the early 15th century, Paimpol's importance as a fishing port grew; Around 1700 a special type of fishing vessel, the Goélette paimpolaise (French for Paimpol schooner ), was developed and built there. The fleets fished large parts of the North Atlantic up to the Canadian coast, from the 19th century also in Icelandic waters, and that under the toughest working conditions for the crews; Pierre Loti wrote his novel Pêcheur d'Islande ("Iceland fisherman") about it in 1886 . In 1878 the first harbor basin was dug in Paimpol to protect the schooners from the stress of constant drying out at low tide. Around 1895, more than 80 schooners set up winter quarters in Paimpol. During the fishing season, the Breton fishermen had their base in Fjarðabyggð in Iceland ; There is still a French museum there today and the street names are bilingual (Icelandic / French).

In the run-up to the French Revolution , in the late summer of 1787, as in other places in Brittany, there were protests by members of the third estate in Paimpol because of the catastrophic food supply. In 1790 Paimpol and Plounez obtained parish status . Before the Second World War , the city was one of the centers of Breton nationalism and the movement for state recognition of the Breton language. In 1960, from the merger of the villages of Paimpol, Plounez and Kérity, the municipality as it is today. Jean-Yves de Chaisemartin (initially UDF , now PRV ) has been mayor since 2008 .

The sudden increase in population in 1962 is mainly due to the merger of Paimpol with two neighboring communities.

economy

Paimpol train station

Today Paimpol is of considerable tourist importance, on the land side as the eastern entrance to the Côte de Granit Rose and on the water side due to its leisure and pleasure boat harbor, which was awarded the Blue Flag in 2008 . The local infrastructure has adapted to this development through gastronomy and accommodation, an in-town motorhome park , retail and boat outfitter shops. The famous sailing school Les Glénans also has one of its five French bases in Paimpol. Part of the port area can be used as winter quarters for over 100 smaller ships. In the summer season, a steam locomotive-drawn museum train (La vapeur du Trieux) runs to Pontrieux .

In contrast, the importance of traditional industries has declined. The fishing boats and the fish market have now partially moved to the neighboring Ploubazlanec ( Loguivy-de-la-Mer and Pors Even ). In Paimpol, however, there are still small shipyards and oyster farms . In the rural parts of the municipality, vegetables are grown, both outdoors and in greenhouse crops (especially tomatoes ).

A regional weekly newspaper, La Presse d'Armor , has been published in Paimpol since 1877 .

Culture and town twinning

At present, Paimpol attracts numerous artists, especially painters, sculptors and photographers, who work in the community and exhibit their works. Since 1989, Paimpol has organized the three-day festival du chant de marin ("Festival of the Sailor's Song ") in the port area every odd August ; then the entire port is blocked for other uses. The festival has recently also been open to world music . Since 2003, musicians such as Idir , Denez Prigent , Carlos Núñez , Dan Ar Braz , Rokia Traoré and Johnny Clegg have performed there.

City partnerships currently exist with Grundarfjörður (Iceland), Romsey (Great Britain) and Vermilion (United States).
