The former Beauport Abbey

The former Abbey of Notre-Dame de Beauport is located in the district of Kérity in the municipality of Paimpol ( Côtes-d'Armor department , Brittany ).

history

Beauport Abbey was founded in 1202 with the support of Alain I, Count of Penthièvre († 1212). He provided land between the mouth of the Correc and a swamp area, the "Pré aux oies" (goose pasture), on which monks from the Premonstratensian Abbey of La Lucerne near Avranches settled.

Equipped with papal privileges, they began building the monastery in 1203. Beauport thrived mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries and had a new bloom phase in the first half of the 18th century. The decline in 1750 was followed by closure in 1790. In 1797, Louis Morand, Island fishermen from Paimpol, bought part of the abbey, the rest became the property of the municipality of Kérity. The looting of the abbey that began with its closure was not ended until 1862, when Beauport was classified as a Monument historique .

In 1992, Beauport came into the possession of the Conservatoire du littoral . The restoration work that has now started made Beauport one of the most important tourist destinations in Brittany.

buildings

The facade, the main nave (without roof), the north aisle and the left transept are still standing from the 13th century church. The long chapter house to the east of the monastery with its polygonal apses is an excellent example of Anglo-Norman Gothic . In the north-west is the access to the spacious refectory , which opened to the sea with round arches. The ducal building, the guest house for the pilgrims and the access to the vaulted cellar under the refectory led out onto the forecourt. The taxes (on salt and grain) were received in another building. The two-aisled guest room is used today as a reception and information building.
