Parish Church of St. Corentin

Saint-Connan ( Breton : Sant-Konan ) is a French commune with 297 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany . It belongs to the arrondissement of Guingamp and is a member of the local authority association Kreiz-Breizh .

geography

The municipality of Saint-Connan is located about 20 kilometers south of Guingamp and about 30 kilometers southwest of Saint-Brieuc . The Trieux flows through the west of the municipality and feeds a reservoir of the same name in the district of L'Étang Neuf .

In addition to L'Étang Neuf and the village of Saint-Connan , which is located on the Étang de Saint-Connan and was named after Saint Connan , the municipality also includes the districts of Galbouan-d'en-Haut, Coat-ar-Belléquès and Coldabry as well numerous hamlets and individual farms.

The landscape around Saint-Connan is characterized by arable land and grassland, which are separated from each other by hedges typical of the area. Apart from the slopes on steep sections of the river, the area is poorly forested; only in the west does the municipality have a small share of the approximately 150 hectare Bois de Coat Mallouen .

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Connan are Senven-Léhart in the north, Saint-Gildas in the east, Le Vieux-Bourg in the south-east, Saint-Gilles-Pligeaux in the south and Kerpert in the south-west.

history

The village of Saint-Connan was founded in the early 12th century at the time of the establishment of the Coat Mallouen Abbey. The municipality of Saint-Connan belonged to Saint-Gilles-Pligeaux for a long time , only during the French Revolution was an independent municipality created - in 1793 under the name Roc Conan , from 1801 Saint-Connan.

The parish church of Saint-Corentin dates from the 17th century, the neo-Gothic tower was rebuilt in the late 19th century.

In July 1944 the area around Saint-Connan was the scene of fighting by the Maquis against the German occupiers. The partisans of the Resistance later took part in the liberation of Guingamp and Paimpol .
