Saint-Gilles-les-Bois ( Breton : Sant-Jili-ar-C'hoad ) is a French commune with 432 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany . It belongs to the arrondissement of Guingamp and the canton of Plouha . The residents call themselves Saint Gillois (es) .
geography
Saint-Gilles-les-Bois is located around 12 km (as the crow flies) north of Guingamp in the central north of Brittany. Most of the streams form a natural municipality boundary.
history
In 1325 the place was first mentioned by name in the Latin form Sancti Aegidi de Pommerit Vicecomitis . Up until the French Revolution, various noble families administered the area of the present-day community. From 1793 to 1801, Saint-Gilles-les-Bois was part of the Pontrieux district . From 1793 to 1801 the municipality was the canton capital of the canton Saint Gilles le Vicomte . After that, the place belonged to the canton of Pontrieux until 2015 . Administratively, Saint-Gilles-les-Bois has also been part of the Guingamp arrondissement since 1801 . In the period after the French Revolution, the community was sometimes called Bellevue . In 1833 the hamlet of Kerionou was given to the municipality of Trévérec .

The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the numerous deaths during the First World War led to a drop in the number of inhabitants to the lowest levels in the present.
