Ploëzal ( Breton : Pleuzal ) is a French commune with 1,250 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Côtes-d'Armor department in the Brittany region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Guingamp and the canton of Bégard . The residents call themselves Ploëzalais (es) .
geography
Ploëzal is about 18 kilometers (as the crow flies) north of Guingamp in the central north of Brittany. The Trieux River forms the eastern boundary of the municipality . Another natural boundary to the south of the municipality is the Ruisseau de l'Étang de Launay stream .
history
The remains of several tumulus graves show early settlement. In the Middle Ages, Ploëzal was part of the Seigneurs du château fort de La Roche-Jagu . The place was first mentioned in 1294 under the name Ploisal . From 1793 to 1801 Ploëzal was part of the Pontrieux district . From 1793 to 2015, the place also belonged to the canton of Pontrieux . Administratively, Ploëzal has also been part of the Arrondissement of Guingamp since 1801 . On March 31, 1859, part of the south of the community was assigned to Pontrieux . From 1973 to 1986 the municipality of Runan (1968: 276 inhabitants; 1990: 227 inhabitants) belonged to Ploëzal.

The increasing mechanization of agriculture and the numerous deaths during the First World War led to a drop in the number of inhabitants to the lowest levels in the present.
