etymology
The place name Pléhédel (formerly also Plohedel ) is made up of the Breton word ploe ( Eng . "Parish") and the name Hédel . Saint Hédel was a Breton saint for whom no further facts are known.
geography
Pléhédel is surrounded by the municipalities of Paimpol and Plouézec in the north, Lanloup and Plouha in the east, Pommerit-le-Vicomte and Lanvollon in the south and Pontrieux in the west. The north of France's Atlantic coast is about 7 km from the center of the municipality.
history
Pléhédel was first mentioned in a deed of donation from the 13th century. Archaeological finds indicate settlement as early as the Iron Age . For a long time the community was owned by the noble Boisgelin family, who settled here in the 12th century. Until 1933, a member of the family ran the community as mayor.
Until 1836 Lanleff belonged to the municipality of Pléhédel.
In the 19th century there was a quarry in which pink sandstone was mined, such as was used in the construction of the Saint-Pierre church. Flax was also grown and processed.
