The Côte de Granit Rose ( Breton : Aod ar Vein Ruz ; German : pink granite coast ) is a stretch of coast in northern Brittany between Paimpol and Trébeurden . Because of its bizarre rock formations made of reddish granite , especially around Perros-Guirec , it is a tourist attraction.

Emergence

The pink granite was formed around 300 million years ago in the Upper Carboniferous in the course of the Variscan orogeny , a phase of mountain formation as a result of the collision of the supercontinent Gondwana and Laurussia as well as several microplates . The erosion of the overlying layers of earth and the gradual erosion caused by the rise in sea level after the last Ice Age led to an expansion of the dividing surfaces of the orthogonal fracture system and the formation of special rock formations. These can best be seen on the old customs officers' path (French: Sentier des Douaniers ) from Perros-Guirec to Ploumanac'h . The granite owes its characteristic color to its hematite and alkali feldspar content .

particularities

Due to their distinctive shapes, some of the rocks, often the size of a house, have been given proper names, such as Napoleon's hat , which is in front of the port of Ploumanac'h. It achieved particular fame when the BBC, in the early evening of August 3, 1944, with the question Le chapeau de Napoléon est-il toujours à Perros? (“Is Napoleon's hat still in Perros?”) Gave the Resistance the signal for an armed uprising against the German occupying forces in Brittany.

The rocks also owe their shape to the forces of ebb and flow . The tidal range on this stretch of coast is up to 12 meters. When the tide is low, you can hike across extensive sandy areas to offshore islands. Therefore, numerous mussel shells, z. B. of sea ears find.

On a rock in the port of Ploumanac'h there is a statue of Saint Guirec, which is only accessible at low tide . Originally made of wood, it is now made of granite, as it used to suffer from an idiosyncratic custom: unmarried women who wanted a husband stuck a needle into the nostrils of the icon.

The crime novel Breton Lights by Jean-Luc Bannalec is set around Ploumanac'h on the pink granite coast.
