Walsingham (pronunciation: [ wɔːlsɪŋʌm ]) is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk . The place gained fame above all for its Marian altars and its status as a place of pilgrimage. In the community there are also remains of the walls of two monastery buildings from the Middle Ages.
The place
The local parish , consisting of the villages of Little Walsingham and the smaller Great Walsingham as well as the medieval deserted Egmere, covers an area of 18.98 km². The 2011 census found a population of 819 people. Administratively, the parish belongs to the North Norfolk County .
The pilgrimage
In the 11th century Walsingham became an important place of pilgrimage . In 1061 the Anglo- Norman nobleman Richeldis de Faverches the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared here . In this vision de Faverches received the commission from the Blessed Mother to build a replica of the Nazareth house of the Holy Family in honor of the Annunciation . 1150 next to the Marian shrine was an Augustinian canons - Pen founded. The buildings were destroyed during the Reformation and the monastery was dissolved in 1538. An old popular folk song is about the traditional pilgrimage to the Church of Our Lady in Walsingham. The pilgrimage to Our Lady of Walsingham was revived in the 19th and 20th centuries.
