history

The Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway, founded in 1861, received the concession on July 7, 1862 to build a railway line from Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead . The Society's president was William Reginald Courtenay, 11th Earl of Devon . The cost of construction was estimated at £ 88,500. The shares for the company were only hesitantly subscribed. In addition, the bad weather caused delays in construction of the route planned by South Devon Railway engineer PJ Margary. This 20-kilometer-long, 2140-mm wide-gauge line could only be opened on July 4, 1866. Operations were carried out by the South Devon Railway. This company took over the Moretonhampstead and South Devon Railway on July 18, 1872.
