Port Pirie is a city in the Australian state of South Australia . It is located about 220 km northwest of Adelaide on the Pirie River, which flows 8 km further west into the Spencer Gulf .

Port Pirie was founded in 1845 and today has about 14,000 inhabitants. In the city is the Port Pirie Smelter , the largest lead smelter in the world. It processes lead and other ores from the Broken Hill mines .

Port Pirie is the second largest port in South Australia and the starting point for excursions in the Flinders Range . The city is also the seat of the Port Pirie diocese of the Roman Catholic Church, which covers most of South Australia.
