Sri Ganganagar ( Hindi : श्री गंगानगर; Punjabi : ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੰਗਾਨਗਰ; also Sriganganagar or Ganganagar ) is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan .
The city emerged as a planned city in the Thar desert in the far north of Rajasthan not far from the border with Pakistan . The city was named after Ganga Singh , Maharaja of Bikaner . The foundation and development of the city was the construction of the Gang Canal , which provides irrigation for the fertile surrounding area.
Sri Ganganagar is the capital of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 224,532.
