Maiden Newton is a village of 952 inhabitants (2001) and a Civil parish in Dorset , England .

The place was connected to the railway line of the Wilts, Sommerset and Weymouth Railway in 1857 and was also the northern end of the Bridport Railway . While the rail line to Bridport was closed in 1975, Maiden Newton is still a stop on the Heart of Wessex Line today .

Maiden Newton was described by Thomas Hardy in the fictional Wessex of his novels as Chalk Newton in South Wessex .

The River Hooke flows into the River Frome at Maiden Newton .
