The Devon and Somerset Railway was a British railway company based in Devon and Somerset in England.

The company received on July 29, 1864 the concession to build a broad-gauge (2140 mm) 68 kilometers long route from Norton Fitzwarren to Barnstaple . The construction went slowly, so on June 8, 1871 the section to Wiveliscombe and on November 1, 1873 to Barnstaple was completed. The operation took over the Bristol and Exeter Railway . In 1881 the line was converted to standard gauge.

On August 31, 1885, a connection from Barnstaple Victoria Road station to the London and South Western Railway at Barnstaple Junction station was approved. This went into operation on June 1, 1887 and allowed continuous traffic on the Barnstable and Ilfracombe Railway .

On July 26, 1901, the Great Western Railway took over the company. As a result of the Beeching ax , the route was discontinued on October 1, 1966.
