The Barnstaple railway station is the terminus of the Tarka Line and is located in Barnstaple northwest of Exeter in the county of Devon in the UK . The station is normally served by eleven trains on weekdays and six trains on Sundays; these lead via Exeter, where there is a connection to the main line, to Exmouth . A footpath leads from the station to the bike path which runs on the disused railway line to Bideford . The station is served by the First Great Western railway company.

history

Goods had been transported to the Fremington Quay since August 1848 . On August 1, 1854, the North Devon Railway from Barnstaple to Crediton opened for passenger services. The connection is extended on November 2, 1855 beyond Fremington to Bideford . Under certain circumstances it was also planned to return the route to Okehampton via Great Torrington and Halwill Junction .

On July 20, 1874, Barnstaple Junction was officially renamed and opened to the Ilfracombe Branch Line for passenger services . After a large 90 ° curve, it crossed the River Taw to Barnstaple Quay station , which was renamed Barnstaple Town station in 1892 when the narrow-gauge Lynton and Barnstaple Railway opened there. This station now functions as a shopping center.
