Colyton is a city in England , United Kingdom . Administratively it belongs to the East Devon district in the county of Devon .

Traffic and geographic location

The city lies at an altitude of 15 meters above sea level in the east to 70 meters in the west. The English Channel is about three kilometers south of the city. The nearest international airport is Exeter International Airport, 25 kilometers to the west . The road with the number A3052 runs just under a kilometer south of Colyton.

history

During the time of the Roman Empire , a settlement was built south of today's city. The next settlers in this area were the Saxons who helped the place to a certain degree of prosperity. In the 15th century Colyton was one of the richest places in the area. Henry VIII had the owner of the place Henry Courtney beheaded in 1539 and his property was confiscated. In 1546 or 1549 Colyton residents bought the place back from King Henry VIII. Henry VIII also gave the city the right to hold a market three days a week. In 1851 2,504 people lived in the city.

Attractions

The church of St. Andrew from the 15th century is worth seeing . In it is a restored cross which was erected by the Saxons between 800 and 900.

The Seaton Tramway travels from the original station building from 1868 through two nature reserves to the city ​​of Seaton on the English Channel .
