Montesquiu is a Catalan municipality in the province of Barcelona in northeastern Spain . It is in the comarca of Osona .

Geographical location and climate

Montesquiu is located about 80 kilometers north of Barcelona on the River Ter . The place is in the north of the Comarca Osona, to which it belongs since 1990. Before that he belonged to the Comarca Ripollès . The district lies at an altitude between 550 and 885 meters. The shape of the landscape forms the transition between the Vic plain and the Pyrenees . The climate also forms a transition between the Mediterranean climate and the mountain climate of the Pyrenees. From the first, Montesquiu receives the mild temperatures, from the second the rain and sometimes snowfall.

history

The core of the place is in the south of the district, on a terrace above the Ter. The oldest documented building is the 1,285 documented castle Castell de Montesquiu . In the 16th century the first house was built, a forge on the road from Barcelona to Ripoll . For almost four centuries, Montesquiu developed as an offshoot of the neighboring town of Sant Quirze de Besora , on which it was administratively dependent. Finally, on August 25, 1934, Montesquiu became independent.
