The Seaton (Electric) Tramway is an electrically operated narrow-gauge railway that runs between Seaton and Colyton in East Devon in the UK .

history

The Seaton Electric Tramway opened in 1970 on the branch line that was abandoned in 1966 and is used exclusively for tourist purposes. In the beginning there were eight cars on the route. These originally ran on a roughly one kilometer long route in Eastbourne , under the name Eastbourne Electric Tramway . In 1969 and 1970 the cars were transported to Seaton from Eastbourne, about 140 kilometers away, where most of the cars were manufactured. In the beginning there was no overhead line , the energy was supplied from batteries that were housed in a battery car and pulled by the railcar. In September 1973 the overhead line was completed and the last stretch of the Seaton Tramway to Colyton was opened in 1980. In 2009, 11 vehicles ran on the route, over 100,000 visitors per year are transported.

Routing

Passage on the Ax

The route follows the River Ax in its valley and crosses two nature reserves, Seaton Marshes and Colyford Common . From the train it is possible to observe the wildlife, especially birds, in the reserves. The route connects the city of Seaton on the English Channel with the medieval city of Colyton. In Colyton the original station building from 1868 is still in use. From there it is a 10-minute walk to the center. At the intermediate station in Colyford there is a small motorcycle museum, housed in a gas station from 1928.

vehicles

Three of the vehicles are originals from various English cities and date from 1904, 1906 and 1921, the others are replicas that have been optically adapted to these, but two-story and open at the top.
