Francis Drake

Francis Drake (* 1764 in Colyton (Devon) ; † 1821 ) was a British diplomat .

Life

Francis Drake was the son of Reverend Francis Drake, vicar in Seaton and Beer (Devon) . On September 4, 1790, Drake was appointed legation secretary at the court of Copenhagen , where he served as chargé d'affaires. From January 5 to July 4, 1793 he was Minister Resident in the Republic of Venice . From August 15, 1793 to October 10, 1797, he headed the military reconnaissance as envoy in the Republic of Genoa .

In 1795 he married Eliza-Anne, daughter of Herbert Mackworth of Gnoll House , in England. From September 1795 to May 1796 he was a military advisor to the Austrian army in Veneto and encouraged action against Napoleon's troops.

From April 6, 1799 to October 10, 1805 he was Ministre plénipotentiaire at the perennial Reichstag in Regensburg and envoy extraordinary to Maximilian I Joseph , Elector Palatinate .

His correspondence with informants in France was read by Napoleon Bonaparte's authorities and suggested a conspiracy by Jean-Charles Pichegru and Georges Cadoudal .
