Sir Herbert Mackworth, 1st Baronet FRS ( January 1, 1737 - October 25, 1791 ) was a British politician , industrialist and nobleman .

Life

Herbert Mackworth was the only son of Herbert Mackworth and Juliana Digby, daughter of William Digby, 5th Baron Digby of Geashill . He attended Westminster School in 1748 and studied from 1753 at Magdalen College , Oxford , where he graduated as a Bachelor in 1757 . He also studied in 1754 at Lincoln's Inn , where he in 1759 as a barrister was approved. In 1760 he earned a master's degree from Oxford . After the death of his father in August 1765, he inherited his possessions, especially the copper smelter Gnoll Copper Company and coal mines inNeath . He expanded coal mining and also founded a local bank. As his father's successor, he had become Member of Parliament for Cardiff at the beginning of January 1766 with the support of John Stuart , later the Marquess of Bute and Lord of Cardiff Castle . In the House of Commons , he was an independent MP who was involved in numerous committees, but often supported the government. He remained a member of parliament until 1790, so that the Cardiff constituency was represented uninterruptedly by father and son Mackworth for 51 years, until Herbert Mackworth in the 1790 general election in favor of John Stuart, Viscount Mount Stuart , eldest son of the Marquess of Bute had to do without renewed candidacy.

From 1776 to 1778 he had his residence at Gnoll House near Neath extended by a north and a south wing. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society and was promoted to Baronet , of the Gnoll in the County of Glamorgan on September 16, 1776 , and he also held the rank of Colonel of the Glamorgan Militia . He died of blood poisoning in 1791.

Family and offspring

On May 13, 1761, he married Elizabeth Trefusis, daughter of Robert Cotton Trefusis of Cornwall, with whom he had several children, including:

  • Elizabeth Anne Mackworth ⚭ Francis Drake
  • Sir Robert Humphrey Mackworth, 2nd Baronet (1764–1794)
  • Sir Digby Mackworth, 3rd Baronet (1766-1838)

His heir became his eldest son Robert, who died in 1794 with no descendants, so that his title passed to his second son Digby.
