Herbert Mackworth (born September 7, 1687 , † August 20, 1765 ) was a British industrialist and politician.

Life

Herbert Mackworth was the eldest son of Humphrey Mackworth and Mary Evans. His mother was the heiress of Sir Herbert Evans of Neath , so that his father had acquired an extensive property and industrial estate in South Wales which he continued to develop. Herbert Mackworth attended Westminster School and then studied at Magdalen College in Oxford in 1704 and at the Inner Temple in London in 1708 . After his father's death in 1727 he inherited his possessions, including the copper smelter Gnoll Copper Works and several coal mines in Neath. Around 1730 he had his residence at Gnoll House near Neath expanded, and from 1740 the garden was redesigned. Among other things, he had a grotto, a gatehouse and the Ivy Tower built as a folly .

Through his estate he politically controlled Neath and Aberavon , and in February 1739 he was elected MP for Cardiff with the assistance of Herbert Windsor, 2nd Viscount Windsor , Lord of Cardiff Castle . With the support of Windsor and his widow, he was elected in the next elections and remained a Member of Parliament for Cardiff until his death. In the House of Commons he was a member of the Tories , but voted on February 13, 1741 against the dismissal of Whigs Robert Walpole as Prime Minister . Otherwise he remained politically inconspicuous, and no speech has survived from him in parliament.

Family and offspring

On April 24, 1730 he married Juliana Digby, daughter of William Digby, 5th Baron Digby of Geashill . With her he had a son and six daughters, including:

  • Frances Mackworth (1731-1814)
  1. ∞ Alexander Falconer, 5th Lord Falconer of Halkertoun

  • Herbert Mackworth (1737-1791)
  • Susanna Mackworth (* 1738) ∞ Sir John Hotham, 9th Baronet

His son Herbert Mackworth became his heir.
