Tea plantation near Munnar |
Munnar ( Malayalam : മൂന്നാർ Mūnnār [ ˈmuːnːɑːr ]) is a place in the Western Ghats in Kerala in southwest India . It is known for the tea plantations that surround the place for miles and is therefore a popular tourist destination. The place is a hill station , which was already a popular summer retreat for the military and civil servants during the British colonial era.
geography
Munnar is located at the confluence of the Muthirappuzha , Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers at an altitude of approx. 1500 to 1600 meters. The name Munnar was therefore probably derived from the Malayalam words munu ("three") and aru ("river").
The Panchayat Munnar has an area of almost 557 km², making it the largest Panchayat in the Idukki district . He belongs to the Devikulam block .
The next larger train stations are in Ernakulam and Aluva (approx. 110 km by road). The nearest airport is Kochi Airport, 105 km away.
Attractions
Apart from the charming natural surroundings, in which several national parks have been established, the city hardly offers any sights. Only a colonial church and a modern mosque are historically and / or culturally significant.
Surroundings
- We recommend a trip to the small town of Marayoor , about 40 km to the north-east , in the vicinity of which there are several dolmens or dolmen-like buildings ( muniyaras ), the former meaning and function of which is unclear.
