The Cochin International Airport , and Cochin International Airport ( Malayalam : കൊച്ചി അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളം ) or Nedumbassery Airport called ( IATA code : COK, ICAO code : VOCI) is an international traffic airport in the Indian state of Kerala .

It is located 27 kilometers northeast of Kochi near the village of Nedumbassery in the Ernakulam district , about three kilometers north of the Periyar River. The airport has a runway as well as the adjacent terminals "International" and "Domestic". The airport has a fast road connection to Kochi via its own feeder to the NH 47.

The owner is Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) and the airport operator is the Airports Authority of India .

Photovoltaic systems

On August 19, 2015, it was announced in a press release that the airport will be the first in the world to be entirely powered by solar power . This should save 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the course of 25 years . The solar system is located next to the air cargo area. 46,150 solar modules with a total output of 12 megawatts peak were installed on an area of ​​45 hectares  . Further PV systems are located on the arrival terminal (100 kWp) as well as on and next to the maintenance hangar (1 MWp).

In 2018, the airport was named Champion of the Earth by the United Nations as part of the UN Environment Program for its innovative energy supply .
