The Periyar is a river in the southwest Indian state of Kerala .

The Periyar is the longest and most water-rich river in Kerala. It rises in the Western Ghats at an altitude of 1600  m . Initially, it flows in a north-westerly direction through the mountains. It is dammed up by the Mullaperiyar Dam and the Idukki Dam . It then flows along the foot of the Western Ghats until it turns west at Malayattur . It passes the cities of Kalady , Perumbavoor and Aluva . Finally, the Periyar flows into the Arabian Sea 25 km north of Kochi . The Periyar has a length of 244 km. It drains an area of ​​5398 km², of which 5284 km² are in Kerala and 114 km² in Tamil Nadu . The mean discharge at its mouth is 295 m³ / s.
