The Idukki Dam (other spellings are Idduki and Idikki ) is a dam on the Periyar River in the Idukki district of the southern Indian state of Kerala . It was built in 1976 and is located near Moolamattom between the mountains "Kuravanmala" ( 839 m ) and "Kurathimala" ( 925 m ).
At 167.68 (or 169) meters high, the arch dam was at times one of the largest in Asia, but is nowhere near the highest. The reservoir has a total of three barrier structures , namely Idukki, Cheruthoni and Kulamavu. The Idukki Dam is the only one with an arch dam. The dam was built with Canadian technical cooperation by the Hindustan Construction Company.
The water is led through pipes to an underground powerhouse in Moolamattom, where energy is produced in a hydroelectric power station . There are six turbines with an output of 180 MW each; according to other information, the total output is 780 MW. The first electricity was generated on October 4, 1975.
