Ernakulam ( Malayalam : എറണാകുളം Eṟaṇākuḷam [ ˈerəɳaːkuɭʌm ]) is a part of the city of Kochi (Cochin) in the southern Indian state of Kerala . The modern Ernakulam is located on the mainland east of the historical center of the city ( Fort Kochi ) on a peninsula and is separated from it by Lake Vembanad . Kochi and Ernakulam are both subordinate to the City of Kochi ( Corporation of Cochin ) and together form the most populous place in the state.
Ernakulam is the seat of the municipality of Kochi, the administrative center of the Ernakulam district as well as the economic center of central Alcala, here you will find modern facilities and newer buildings. With the highest telephone density in India, Ernakulam has an indicator of relatively high prosperity: the residents of the district have the highest purchasing power in all of India. In the Ernakulam district, people are proud of the high literacy rate of 94 percent: the exemplary popular education system has primarily meant that girls and women also have almost equal rights to participate.
On Mount St. Thomas near Kakkanad is the seat of the Grand Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church and seat of his Archbishopric Ernakulam-Angamaly with the St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica .
In the suburb of Chendamangalam there is "Paliam Palace" with a Hindu temple, a church and a mosque. There is another island near the city: Willingdon Island. It is connected to the place by the "Venduruthy Bridge". Here is a base of the Indian Navy and the seaport , which was built in the 13th century.
