St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary ( English St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica ) is a Syro-barisches church building in Ernakulam in Kochi in the southern Indian state of Kerala .
history
The church dates from the beginning of the 12th century. It is also known under the names Nasrani Palli, Anchukaimal Palli or Thekke Palli. Since 1886 it has been the cathedral of the Grand Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly . It was repaired in its current form in 1905 under the direction of Mar Aloysius Pazheparambil. On March 20, 1974, Pope Paul VI bestowed the cathedral consecrated to Mary additionally the title of a minor basilica .
architecture
The large, spacious cathedral has an altar that Pope John Paul II used in India on February 7, 1986. The altar of KK Madhavan shows the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The two 20 meter high towers of the entrance facade show statues of the apostles St. Peter and St. Paul on the front , the bell tower with a height of about 27 meters carries the statue of the apostle St. Thomas .
