The Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization (Romanian: Muzeul Civilizaţiei Dacice şi Romane ) is a museum in Deva , the capital of the Hunedoara County in the Romanian region of Transylvania .

History and buildings

The initiative to found the museum came from the Societatea de Istorie și Arheologie a Comitatului Hunedoara (Society for History and Archeology of the Hunedoara District), which was financially supported by George Bariț . The museum was finally housed in the baroque palace Magna Curia and opened in 1882 - initially as the Muzeul Judecean Hunedoara (Hunedoara District Museum ).

The Magna Curia is the oldest architectural monument in the urban area of Deva and was built in 1582 by the governor Francisc Gesztyvom below Deva Castle in the Renaissance style. It served as a residence for Sigismund Báthory , Giorgio Basta , Stephan Bocskai , Gabriel Báthory and Gabriel Bethlen . In 1621, Bethlen initiated a fundamental renovation. A further renovation in the 18th century finally gave the building its current Baroque appearance.

Collections

The museum houses archaeological collections from prehistory, early history , the Dacian , Roman and the Migration Period and the early Middle Ages , as well as numismatic collections, arts and crafts collections, ethnological objects (such as costumes, tools, ceramics and icons ), as well as scientific objects , especially paleontological collections. Its library contains more than 40,000 volumes.

The museum is divided into four different departments, some of which have been moved to other buildings:

  • the history department is located in the main building,
  • the numismatics department is also located in the main building,
  • the Art Department is located in the Prefecture Palace at the opposite end of the Palace Park, and
  • the department for natural sciences is housed in an outbuilding of the castle.
