Virudhunagar ( Tamil : விருதுநகர் Virutunagar [ ˈʋiɾɯðɯnaɡəɾ ], also Virudunagar , formerly Virudupatti ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the southern interior of the state 45 kilometers south of Madurai . The city is the administrative seat of the Virudhunagar District . The population is around 72,000 (2011 census).

Virudhunagar is an important trading center, in which goods from the rural area such as oil, cotton, chilli, spices and cardamom are handled. The city is conveniently located on National Highway 7 , the longest highway in India connecting Varanasi with Kanyakumari . The Virudhunagar train station is also an important traffic junction: A branch line branches off the main line from Madurai to Tirunelveli here, which leads via Tenkasi to the west coast of Kollam .

Virudhunagar is the birthplace of the politician K. Kamaraj (1903–1975). The main attractions of the city are the house where Kamaraj was born and a 400 year old temple of the goddess Mariamman .

85 percent of the residents of Virudhunagar are Hindus , 8 percent are Muslims and 7 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
