Blackwall is a neighborhood in the East End of London in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets on the north bank of the Thames .

The area around the Blackwall Stairs had been known as Blackwall since at least the 14th century. The name is probably due to the color of the river fortifications that were built in the Middle Ages. The area lies in a bend in the river Thames near Poplar , where the East India Docks were built in the early 19th century .

This ensemble - St. Lawrence Cottages - is one of the few parts of old Blackwall that has survived to this day. The area today is mainly dominated by newer buildings. The photo shows the view to the west - the old dock wall is in the background and the buildings around Canary Wharf below (February 2006)

.

Today Blackwall is best known for the Blackwall Tunnel , which connects the district under the adjoining Thames with the north of Greenwich . In Blackwall also is fire station in the television series London's Burning station's London Weekend Television .

There was a railway line from Minories via Stepney to Blackwall, the London and Blackwall Railway . The route length was 3½ mls. (approx. 5.6 km). Most of today's DLR route through Limehouse runs over the old viaducts . It was approved as The Commercial Railway in 1836 along Commercial Road in London's East End.

Well-known sailors like Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson , or Walter Raleigh were at home in Blackwall . In 1606 the ships for the colonization of America , which was arranged by the London Company , ran from here.

Industry

For over 350 years until 1987, Blackwall was a center of shipbuilding and ship repair. This included the Blackwall Yard , of which two former dry docks still exist near the Reuters building today, the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd. in Leamouth , some of which were located in Blackwall, and the Orchard House Yard . Today there are only a few industrial plants left here. One of the few surviving companies, Pura Foods Ltd. (Edible Oil) on Orchard Place closed its doors in 2006. The Thames Plate Glass Works (Thames Flat Glass Works ) used to be on this site . For many years the famous Fowler’s sugar factory was also in Blackwall.
