Palakkad ( Malayalam : പാലക്കാട് Pālakkāṭ [ ˈpaːləkːaːɖ ]), formerly Palghat , is a city in the southern Indian state of Kerala with around 130,000 inhabitants (2011 census). The city is the administrative seat of the Palakkad district . The name Palakkad ( Pālakkāṭ ) is composed of the Malayalam words pāla , the name for the tree species Alstonia scholaris , and kāṭŭ for "forest". Sometimes the city is still known by its anglicized form of name Palghat .
Geography and traffic
Palakkad is located in the inland of central Alcala on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River near the border with the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu . Between Palakkad and Coimbatore , located around 50 kilometers northeast in Tamil Nadu, the Western Ghats , which otherwise form the natural border between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, are interrupted over a distance of around 25 kilometers by the so-called "Palakkad gap" ( Palghat Gap ). As a result, Palakkad forms the gateway to the Malabar Coast , and the connections to the neighboring state are well established. With the National Highway 47 and the Chennai - Ernakulam railway line , two of the most important transport links between the two states run through Palakkad.
history
The local ruler of Palakkad released himself from paying tribute to the Zamorines of Calicut (Kozhikode) at the beginning of the 18th century . In 1757 he asked Hyder Ali , the ruler of Mysore, for support against the Zamorines, whose attack he feared. Hyder Ali took the opportunity to secure the strategically valuable Palakkad and built a fortress. As a result, Palakkad was drawn into the Mysore wars between Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan and the British . The fort was captured by the British for the first time in 1768, but was retaken by Hyder Ali only a few months later. In 1783 the British conquered the fort again, but gave it up a year later before it finally came under British rule in 1790. As part of the Malabar district , the city of Madras was incorporated into the Presidency and thus British India . After Indian independence, the city came to the state of Kerala in 1956, which was reorganized according to the language borders of the Malayalam, and became the administrative seat of the Palakkad district.
