history

Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl, later King Karl IX. , at the mouth of the river Tidan in the Vänern and named after his wife Anna Maria von der Pfalz . In 1584 Mariestad became the bishopric of a newly founded diocese, in 1647 this bishopric was moved to Karlstad . In 1660 Mariestad became the capital of the province of Skaraborg County , which ensured stable development for the city. At the end of the 19th and 20th centuries there was an industrial boom.

economy

Today Mariestad is no longer a residential city, as Skaraborgs län was part of the newly formed province of Västra Götalands län in 1998 together with two other provinces , but the city is still an administrative center and houses a number of industrial companies in the household goods ( Electrolux ), paper production and Furniture manufacturing.

Mariestad has a train station on the Gårdsjö – Håkantorp railway line , from where Gothenburg and Örebro can be reached.
