Europaviertel (Luxembourg)
The European Quarter in Luxembourg is located on the Kirchberg Plateau in Luxembourg City .
The city of Luxembourg is the birthplace of Robert Schuman , who in 1950 presented his idea of an economic and political community of European peoples. This led to the establishment of the European Communities . The founding assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) also took place in Luxembourg, chaired by Jean Monnet . Some of the institutions of today's European Union have been based in Luxembourg since 1952 .
Today these institutions are located on the Kirchberg plateau:
- The General Secretariat of the European Parliament : it prepares the parliamentary work and is also the seat of the translation service.
- Part of the Directorates General of the European Commission : this is where the coordination and implementation of Community policy takes place.
- The European Court of Justice : it monitors compliance with Community law in the member states.
- The European Court of Auditors : it audits all income and expenditure of the European budget.
- The European Investment Bank : it supports the balanced development of the international community by financing important projects in compliance with the strict rules of bank management.
- The Council of the European Union : it determines the common policy and meets in Luxembourg in April, June and October.
- The Translation Center for the Bodies of the European Union (CdT) for translation work for the decentralized bodies and institutions of the Community.
- The Euratom Supply Agency to supply the Union with fissile material, for example for nuclear power generation.
- The Max Planck Institute Luxemburg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law
