The Gårdsjö – Håkantorp railway is a single-track, 121 km long, now standard-gauge, non-electrified railway line in Västra Götalands län in Sweden . It leads from Gårdsjö to Håkantorp . The route is named after the table mountain Kinnekulle , which lies on the route.

Since the naming by Banverket in 1990, the route has been referred to as Kinnekullebanan . This is an art term that was coined under other names long after the individual sections of the route were built. Today the route is used by regional trains, the Kinnekulletåget , which run between Hallsberg , 50 kilometers north of Gårdsjö, and Herrljunga , 27 kilometers south of Håkantorp.

history

When the Västra stambana (western trunk line) from Stockholm to Gothenburg was built, a dense network of narrow-gauge railways with a gauge of 891 mm was created in Skaraborgs län , connecting cities such as Mariestad, Skara and Lidköping with the main line and creating connections with each other. Around 1900 Västergötland – Göteborgs järnvägsaktiebolag (VGJ) and Lidköpings järnvägar (LJ) were created.

VGJ was founded to connect the narrow-gauge networks in Västergötland and Göteborgs och Bohus län in order to upgrade the entire network and to open up the hinterland of the city of Gothenburg . The company built some railway lines itself and connected numerous narrow-gauge island networks by renting or buying them.

LJ was a consortium set up to jointly manage railway companies in Skaraborg County, wholly or partly owned by the City of Lidköping .

VGJ and the independent companies managed by LJ were taken over by Statens Järnvägar (SJ) in 1948 as part of the general nationalization of the railways . Large parts of the narrow-gauge network were shut down. The routes that form the Kinnekullebana today were converted to standard gauge in the 1950s and 1960s .

The historical parts of the line for the now Kinnekullebanan railway line Gårdsjö – Håkantorp were:

Details about the nationalization of the individual railway companies and the conversion to standard gauge can be found in the route articles.

Route description

The route branches off from Västra stambana to the west at Gårsdsjö . It leads through the forests of Tiveden to Hova , crosses the Göta Canal at Lyrestad and reaches the Vänern shortly before Mariestad . Between Mariestad and Lidköping, the train follows the shore of the lake, with the route from Hällekis to Källby at the foot of the table mountain Kinnekulle. This route is considered to be the most scenic part of the railway line. Along the Kinneviken Bay, it reaches Lidköping. From there the route runs over the Västgöta plain to Håkantorp, where the railway connects to the Älvsborgsbana .

business

The passenger transport is organized by the regional transport association Västtrafik , which commissioned BK Tåg AB with the operational management from 2000 to 2003 and Veolia Transport from 2003 to June 13, 2009 , before Arriva Sverige took over the services on June 14, 2009 until 2016 . Freight traffic is only operated on the Hallsberg – Mariestad section.

Since 2005, passenger transport has been carried out with type Y31 / Y32 diesel multiple units. The Y1 multiple unit is only used on individual trains .

There is very limited traffic at the weekend. Several trains continue via Håkantorp to Herrljunga and Gothenburg, as well as via Gårdsjö to Hallsberg and Örebro. The route has no regular traffic, but is oriented as required. In the morning and evening hours, the trains run to the larger cities in line with the flow of commuters, while there are occasionally no trains in the morning and early afternoon.
