Västtrafik is the second largest transport association in Sweden .

The company, based in Skövde, operates local public transport with buses, ferries, trains, taxis and trams in the province of Västra Götalands län and in the municipality of Kungsbacka in the province of Hallands län .

The company was incorporated on August 21, 1998 and began operations on January 1, 1999. The transport companies Göteborgsregionens Lokaltrafik AB , Göteborgs och Bohus Läns Trafik AB , Älvsborgstrafik AB and Skaraborgs Läns Trafik AB took over shares in the new company. At the same time, the city traffic in Gothenburg, which was operated independently up to this point, was transferred to the company. In 2006 all subsidiaries merged with the parent company.

Since February 1, 2012, the owner is only Västra Götalandsregionen , previously 49 municipalities in the province of Västra Götalands län and the province each held half of the ownership shares.

In 2011, 267 million travelers drove with Västtrafik.
