The Lidköping – Tun railway line ( Lidköping-Kållands järnväg or Tunbanan ) was a 28-kilometer narrow-gauge railway in the Swedish province of Skaraborgs län and the historic province of Västergötland on Lake Vänern . It was built by Lidköping – Kållands järnvägaktiebolag .

history

Between 1850 and 1900, railway construction was strongly promoted in Sweden. During this time, many narrow-gauge railways were built in Skaraborgs to provide access to the region. However, the railroad had not yet reached Örslösa, Tådene and Tun, but the horse and carriage seemed out of date. So plans were made for a standard gauge line between Lidköping and Grästorp in order to gain access to the state railway line to Uddevalla . Landowners and representatives of the communities supported the project. Grain, lime, wood, peat and passengers promised profit.

Lidköping – Kållands järnvägaktiebolag

So Lidköping-Kållands järnvägaktiebolag was founded to realize the project. However, the shares found little interest in railway construction. The money was only enough to finance the three Swedish miles of narrow-gauge stretch between Lidköping and Tun. The company's shareholders began construction of the route despite the financial adversity. The share capital was 337,700 crowns .

Traffic to the "obetydliga platsen" ( insignificant place ) Tun on the Kålland peninsula in the south of Lake Vänern was opened on November 12, 1908. According to the final accounts for 1910, the construction costs were 853,000 crowns, while the vehicles cost 153,000 crowns.

In addition, the company owned the concessions for the construction of the twelve-kilometer Tun – Grästorp line to Uddevalla – Vänersborg – Herrljunga järnväg (UWHJ) and for an eleven-kilometer continuation between Grästorp and Hallebo on the future Trollhättan – Nossebro railway . However, both routes were not built.

vehicles

The company went into liquidation as early as 1925 and the Swedish state took over the route. On December 2, 1928, the railway was sold to the city of Lidköping. From then on, traffic on the route was carried out by Lidköpings järnvägar .

As part of the general nationalization of the railway , the state also bought this line in 1939. In the same year all traffic was stopped due to the low usage.

Part of the line was re-gauged to standard gauge and remained as an industrial connection. In 2010 it was decided to dismantle the line in the direction of the Tofta industrial area. The last remaining parts of the route disappeared. Between Tun and Tådene, parts of the embankment have been used for private roads.

In 1908, on the way to Björnegården gravel pit, two people came between the wagons of the train and were fatally injured.
