The Kinnekulle is one of the Västgötaberge , the west Swedish layer table mountains .
location
The mountain is located in the historic province of Västergötland on the east bank of Lake Vänern between the towns of Mariestad in the north and Lidköping in the south.
nature
The Kinnekulle, which reaches a height of 306 meters, has a very varied vegetation. Deciduous and mixed forests alternate with pasture and arable land. There are several nature reserves on the Kinnekulle. From an observation tower you can look over the Vänern to Läckö , Lidköping and Mariestad, and in a south-easterly direction you can see the Billingen .
There were also several quarries ( alum slate and limestone ) on Kinnekulle, some of which are now closed.
Settlement and use
The Kinnekulle is an old cultural area. Above all, evidence from the Middle Ages is abundant in the area, such as the churches of Forshem and Husaby , where the first Christian Swedish king Olof Skötkonung was baptized around the year 1000.
Around the mountain there is a 40-kilometer hiking trail (Kinnekulleleden), which leads through the most beautiful nature reserves and the most interesting cultural monuments. A nearby race track, the Kinnekulle Ring, has existed since 1969 .
Kinnekulle is the area with the greatest concentration of Liljestenar in Sweden.
