Per Scheffer , also Pehr (born April 29, 1718 in Mariestad , † December 10, 1790 in Kungslena ) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Per was a member of the baronial line of the Swedish noble family Scheffer . His parents were the Swedish statesman Peter Scheffer (1657-1731) and Helena Maria, née Ehrenstierna (1684-1754). Both in 1771 in the Swedish count conditions raised and childless deceased statesmen Carl Fredrik Scheffer (1715-1786) and Ulrik Scheffer (1716-1799) were his brothers, the Swedish generals Christoffer Freidenfelt (1679 to 1743) and Carl Ehrenkrook (1696-1781) his brother-in-law. He himself remained unmarried and died without leaving children.

Career

Scheffer studied in Uppsala from 1728 before beginning his career in the Swedish army in 1734 as a volunteer with the Livguard . In the same year he was promoted to furier , in 1740 to ensign and finally in 1734 to lieutenant .

As a captain , he moved to the Régiment de Royal Suèdois in 1745 , where he became company commander in 1746 and took part in the fighting during the war on the Rhine . 1749 he became Knight of the Order of the Sword , rose in 1750 to lieutenant colonel , in 1752 to colonel , finally in 1758 to Brigadier on. He received the Order of Military Merit in 1759 and was promoted to Maréchal de camp in 1761 .

In 1763 he returned to the Swedish service as major general and became commander of the Savolax regiment. In 1765 he took over the Kronoberg Regiment and in 1769 received the Commander's Cross of the Order of the Sword. His rise to lieutenant general in 1770 was followed by his takeover as chief of the Uppland regiment in 1772 and, a month later, of the Skaraborg regiment. He was promoted to general in 1776 and field marshal in 1778. During the Russo-Swedish War , Scheffer was given the task of defending Skåne against a possible Danish incursion .
