Mariestad Cathedral
The Mariestad Cathedral is one of the last Gothic churches of Sweden , which were built without historicizing or romantic intentions.
Building history
Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl . Since Mariestad already two years later became the seat of the superintendent of Värmland and Västergötland and an important center of the Reformation, the construction of a cathedral in traditional Gothic style began in 1593. The cathedral only consists of a wide nave, as it seemed more suitable for the sermons of the Reformation. Today's pulpit and altar were created after a fire in 1693.
Mariestad is no longer a bishopric, but the church is still called the cathedral.
organ
The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in 1860 by the organ builder Per Larsson Åkerman. There is still pipe material from this instrument, as well as the magnificent organ prospectus . In 2011 the instrument was reorganized. It has 45 stops on three manual works and a pedal . The Spieltrakturen are mechanically (main and swell are equipped with Baker machines), the Registertrakturen are electric.
