Shantipur , also Santipur , is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal .
The city belongs to the Nadia district . Shantipur has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 24 wards (constituencies).
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 151,777 and that of the metropolitan area is 290,345. Shantipur has a gender ratio of 971 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The literacy rate was 80.9% in 2011. Almost 79% of the population are Hindus , approx. 20% are Muslim and approx. 1% belong to another or no religion. 8.9% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Bengali is the main language in and around the city.
economy
In addition to agriculture, the textile industry is important for the local economy. Shantipur and the surrounding region have always been known for hand-woven saris.
Infrastructure
Shantipur Station is part of the Eastern Railway Division of Indian Railways and connects the city with Kolkata and other cities. National Highway 12 also runs through the city.
