Buxton is a Market town ( market town ) and spa town in the English county of Derbyshire in the UK .
General
The town of Buxton is in the north-west of Derbyshire in the High Peak administrative district on the borders of the counties of Staffordshire and Cheshire . At around 1000 feet (307 meters) tall, it is considered the tallest market town in England and is located in the Peak District on the River Wye, just outside the boundaries of the national park there . It is located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Manchester , 43 km southwest of Sheffield and 56 km northwest of Derby .
The local therapeutic baths were already used by the Romans and are known under the name Aquae Arnemetiae , named after the healing goddess Arnemetia, who is worshiped here . The town flourished in the late 18th century when the Dukes of Devonshire developed the town and again in the late 19th century in the Victorian era.

- The Crescent (built 1780 to 1784), a large building in the city center, following the presentation of the Royal Crescent in Bath built
- Buxton Opera House (1903), an opera house
- Devonshire Dome, originally a hospital, now a University of Derby campus
- Pavillion Gardens, a large city park in the center of town
- Natural Baths, on the site of the originally Roman therapeutic baths
- Poole's Cavern, a show cave in the south of the city
The city is also a starting point for various excursion destinations in the Peak District.

There is a rail link to Stockport and Manchester at Buxton station, with a journey time of one hour to Manchester Piccadilly station . The former railway line to Derby is now abandoned, although there are plans to rebuild it in the long term. The city is also a road junction with the main roads A6, A53 and A515.
