The Hronská Dúbrava – Banská Štiavnica railway is a branch line in Slovakia that was originally built and operated as a narrow-gauge railway through the Selmeczbánya keskenvágányu vasút . It runs in a southerly direction from Hron through the valley of the Jasenica river to the town of Banská Štiavnica .
history
The predecessor of today's railway was a narrow-gauge railway in meter gauge , which was opened as the first public narrow-gauge railway in Hungary in 1873. It took an hour and a half to reach the end of the 20 km route.
Construction of the standard gauge line began in 1943, but was interrupted in 1944 due to the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising . After the German occupation and the course of the front in World War II , construction could only be resumed in 1946. Shortly after the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia came to power in February 1948, the route was named Trať Mládeže (Youth Route).
The entire standard gauge line was opened on October 29, 1949. A planned continuation to the municipalities of Pukanec and Hontianske Nemce did not get beyond the planning stage.
Today several local trains run to the Hronská Dúbrava and Zvolen train stations.
