Sceaux [ so is] a French town in the department of Hauts-de-Seine of the region Île-de-France with 19,344 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017). The inhabitants are called Scéens .
geography
Sceaux is ten kilometers southwest of Paris on a hill. The city is connected to the public rail network in the greater Paris area with a station on the RER B local transport line . Neighboring municipalities are Fontenay-aux-Roses , Le Plessis-Robinson , Bourg-la-Reine and Antony .
history
Sceaux was first mentioned in 1203. In 1530 parts of the city were destroyed by a city fire . The fire also destroyed parts of the neighboring city of Bagneux .

Parc de Sceaux
The castle in Sceaux was formerly the country residence of Jean-Baptiste Colbert , Minister of Louis XIV , and the Duchess of Maine . The main building of the old castle has not been preserved, but the new castle , a neo- Louis XIII- shaped building from 1856, which today houses the Musée de l'Île de France with exhibits on the art, history and cultural history of the Region around Paris from the baroque to the present.
The spacious, 200-hectare park , created by horticultural artist André Le Nôtre , has largely been preserved in its overall composition and is one of the most beautiful parks in the greater Paris area. The Pavillon d'Aurore, built in 1672 and attributed to Claude Perrault , shows a ceiling painting by Charles Le Brun in the middle dome : Aurora , the dawn that precedes the sunrise, is a reference to the hardworking Minister Colbert, who tirelessly looks at the sun, i.e. the Sun King Louis XIV. The Pavillon de Hanovre has also been located in the park of Sceaux since 1932 , which was built in 1757 by Jean-Michel Chevotet for the Duc de Richelieu on the Boulevard des Italiens in Paris. The baroque cascade of Sceaux presents itself in a reconstruction of the 19th century with water-spouting masks by Auguste Rodin .

The city is the seat of the famous Lycée Lakanal high school . There are also preparatory classes for the elite universities in the French education system. Many famous French went to school here, including Jean Giraudoux , Frédéric Joliot-Curie , Maurice Allais and Alain-Fournier .
