Armand Magyar

Armand Magyar (born February 5, 1898 in Budapest , † February 12, 1961 there ) was a Hungarian wrestler . In 1925 he became European bantamweight champion in the Greco-Roman style .

Career

Armand Magyar began wrestling as a teenager at the Budapest Workers' Gymnastics Club . He later moved to the Budapest Athletes Club (BAK) . He focused on the Greco-Roman style. In 1923 he was the first Hungarian champion in the bantamweight class that was only introduced in 1922. He then won this title four times in a row from 1923 to 1927. In 1928 he was replaced by Ödön Zombori as the Hungarian champion in his weight class.

In 1922 Armand Magyar competed at the World Championships in Stockholm . He lost his first fight there against the Swede Harald Jönsson, then won over Karl Andersson from Sweden and retired after another defeat against Kaarlo Mäkinen from Finland and finished 6th. In 1924 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Paris . Wrestling again in the bantamweight division, he won over Arvid Östman from Sweden, A. Knievs, Latvia and J. van Maaren, Netherlands and then lost to Sigfrid Hansson from Sweden and Eduard Pütsep from Estonia . He reached the 5th place.

In 1925, instead of world championships, European championships were introduced by the International Wrestling Federation. Armand Magyar competed at the European Championships in Milan this year . In the bantamweight he won over Paul Reiber from Germany and the two Italians Giovanni Gozzi and Carlo Ponte and became European champion. At the European Championships in Riga in 1926 , he could not defend this title, but won an EM bronze medal with 3rd place. Also in 1927, when the European championship took place in his hometown Budapest, he finished 3rd in the bantamweight division. He lost the decisive fights against Giovanni Gozzi and Eduard Pütsep.

In 1928 he could no longer qualify for the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Ödön Zombori blocked his way there. Armand Magyar then ended his career.
