Marcello Nizzola

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcello Nizzola (born December 17, 1900 in Genoa , † February 22, 1947 there ) was an Italian wrestler .

Career

Marcello Nizzola developed into an excellent wrestler in both styles (Greco-Roman style and free style) in his hometown of Genoa. Since the mid-1920s he was one of the best Italian wrestlers, but was not used at international championships until 1931 because Giovanni Gozzi had blocked his way in his weight class up to then . In 1931 he took part in the European championship in the Greco-Roman style in Prague and won a bronze medal in bantamweight there.

Marcello even won the silver medal at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In the final he was defeated by the German champion Jakob Brendel from Nuremberg just on points. At the European Championships in 1934 in his own country, Marcello only came in 5th place in Rome , although he had defeated the experienced Hungarian Ödön Zombori .

In 1935 Marcello achieved the greatest success of his career in Brussels when he won the European bantamweight title. He then started at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin and the 1937 European Championships in Munich in free style, bantamweight, but won no more medals.

Marcello Nizzola opened a furniture store in Genoa after World War II . In 1947 he was shot in his shop. This murder was never solved. There were suspicions circulating in Genoa that this murder was connected with the political views of Nizzola, who had already joined the fascist party in 1920. He couldn't see that his son Garibaldo was also an excellent wrestler, who in 1951 became vice world champion in free style in the lightweight.
