Ferenc Tóth's international career began in 1933. He won the featherweight title that year at the European Free Style Championships in Paris . He only needed two wins because this championship was weak. In the decisive fight he defeated Jean Vordermann from Switzerland.

In 1934 Ferenc Tóth competed in both styles at the European Championships. In the Greco-Roman style he was runner-up European featherweight champion in Rome , where he u. a. defeated the German silver medal winner of the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles Wolfgang Ehrl . He defeated such strong wrestlers as Gösta Frändfors from Sweden , Jean Vordermann and Eduard Sperling , the three-time European champion in the Greco-Roman style from Germany. But again he couldn't get past Kustaa Pihlajamäki. He was clearly subject to this on points.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin , Ferenc Tóth failed after two victories against Francis Millard from the United States and Kustaa Pihlajamäki. He didn't win a medal and had to be satisfied with 5th place.

In 1937, Ferenc Tóth finally won a victory over Kustaa Pihaljamäki at the European featherweight championship in Munich . Since he also won his other fights, he became European champion for the second time. In 1939 he took part in an international championship for the last time before the Second World War . In Oslo he took it in the Greco-Roman. Style after defeats against Ferdinand Schmitz from Germany and Kustaa Pihlajamäki the 3rd place.

In London he succeeded in winning a medal, which he had not been able to do in Berlin in 1936 and in 1940 and 1944, where the Olympic Games could not take place due to the war. In the Greco-Roman style in featherweight he fought his way to the finals with four wins, in which he failed again at Olle Anderberg . Olympic champion was Mehmet Oktav from Turkey. In free style, actually his favorite style, he just missed another medal with 4th place. Gazanfer Bilge and Ivar Sjölin from Sweden defeated him and relegated him to 4th place. Winning the bronze medal in Greco-Roman. But style was a nice end to his career.
